Itinerary

Morning arrive at Tan Son Nhat, meet with our guide and transfer to the charming hotel. Afternoon, the tour to the Presidential Palace is led by a Palace specialist. Then we will continue our visit to the war remnants Museum. Evening welcome drink and dinner on the Rooftop café of the Rex hotel, a familiar landmark for Americans during the Vietnam War

After breakfast, check out and leave Saigon for a visit to the former operational areas of the 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning). We will first stop at the old Tan Son Nhat West Gate, where a violent battle between the Viet Cong and the Air Cav took place during the Tet Offensive 1968. We continue our drive along HW22 (formerly HW1) over the Hoc Mon bridge to Cu Chi. At Cu Chi, visit the Military Museum before driving through the former Cu Chi base camp, the Headquarters of the 25th Infantry Division, followed by a visit to the VC’s underground tunnels and the Cu Chi Military Cemetery in the Ho Bo woods. Lunch is at Ben Nay restaurant. We drive through the Boi Loi woods to HW26 getting to Nui Ba Den to ride the gondola chairlift up to the temples built on the slope looking over the Dau Tieng Reservoir and Tay Ninh province. Check in to hotel.

Drive 60 km to visit Katum and other FSB near the border between Vietnam and Cambodia with a stop at the French Fort. Drive back to Tay Ninh to visit the Cao Dai Holy See temple and attend the noon service. Lunch is at a local restaurant. Continue to visit the Tay Ninh market then back to hotel. Tonight, local veterans living in Tay Ninh are your hosts for dinner.

Early morning drive through the Iron Triangle, the former operational areas of the 1st Division (The ‘Big Red One’). We first stop at Dau Tieng base camp, then continue driving through the (former) Michelin rubber plantation passing the Lai Khe base, which had been the 1st Division headquarters during the war, the 173rd Airborne Division’s base. Lunch is at a local restaurant. On the way back to Saigon, drive through War Zone D to Dong Xoai and former Phuoc Vinh base, before returning to Saigon for the evening.

Early morning transfer to the airport for flight to Pleiku. On arrival, we drive 40 km to Kontum and check into the hotel. Then we continue driving up to Dak To airstrip, the former base camp of the 4th (Ivy) Division, visiting former battle sites along the road leading to Ben Het, the Special Force camp near Cambodian border. Return to Kontum for lunch at a local restaurant before visiting the wooden Church and the orphanage. Dinner this evening is at a local restaurant.

Morning drive along HW14 to Pleiku and head south to Dragon Mountain and Camp Enari, the former 4th Infantry Division headquarters. We drive on to the Catecka tea plantation and if possible visit the Oasis camp and Jackson Hole. Lunch is at a local restaurant. Return to Pleiku in the afternoon and visit the local market. Take dinner at a local restaurant.

Drive along HW19 through the Mang Yang Pass with stop at An Khe, site of Camp Radcliff, and Hon Kon Mountain – the former base camp of the 1st Calvary. After driving 150 km, we turn off HW 19 to head north along HW1 to Bong Son area, to explore the former AO of the 1st Cavalry and 173rd Brigade in Binh Dinh Province, including LZ English. Lunch is at a local restaurant before return to Qui Nhon for the evening. Dinner is at a local restaurant.

Hotel: Overnight in Quy Nhon
Head south on HW1 to Tuy Hoa with a stop at Tuy Hoa airport where 4th Division was first deployed, and visit the Cham tower. After lunch in Tuy Hoa, we continue driving along the coastal road to Nha Trang. We make stops for photos and sightseeing where we can view the scenic Vung Ro bay, which was once the VC supplies distribution point on the Ho Chi Minh trail at sea. Arrive in Nha Trang and check into the hotel. Dinner is at a local restaurant.

Today is a free day for relaxation on the beach or hike around the city.

Transfer to the airport for a flight to Danang. Upon arrival, we drive to visit the Cham Museum, the Marble Mountains, which was a VC sanctuary during the war. Followed by a stop at a beach, a major former Marine Corps’ R&R spot for lunch, drive onto Hoi An, the old town boasting the vestiges of western and eastern-influenced civilization dating back the 17th – 18th centuries. Check into hotel. Evening, dinner is at Tam Tam restaurant where The Quiet American film shot restaurant.

At 8 am, take a walking tour of the narrow streets visiting the Hoi An Museum, the Phuc Kien pagoda, the 400-year old Japanese covered bridge and 200-year old houses. Drive 2 and half hours to Hue via scenic Hai Van Cloudy Pass where the summit provides a spectacular panoramic view of the central coastline, then passing Phu Bai and the side of Camp Eagle. Lunch is at Lang Co beach. On arrival in Hue, check into hotel. Afternoon, take a dragon boat upstream on the Perfume River to visit Thien Mu pagoda before driving to visit the Imperial Citadel. Dinner is at a restored Royal home with Royal cuisine.

Early morning depart to Quang Tri Province for the DMZ tours, including the “Rock Pile”, “Camp Carol” and former Marine AO’s, Khe Sanh airbase, Ho Chi Minh trails, Dakrong Bridge, and the 17th Parallel. Lunch is at a local restaurant. On the way back, visit the old citadel of Quang Tri, the site of the bloody battle during the Eastertide in 1972. Drive back to Hue for overnight.

Morning, transfer to airport for flight to Hanoi. Upon arriving at Noi Bai airport, we meet our guide and transfer to hotel for check in. Then begin a city tour including the former “Hanoi Hilton” and the Army Museum and drive to Truc Bach lake where an American B52 shot down, to witness the location. Lunch is at “Seasons of Hanoi” restaurant. Afternoon is free. In the evening, enjoy a traditional water puppet show, followed by dinner at Indochine restaurant.

Hotel: Overnight in Ha Noi
At 7am, drive 3 ½ hours to Ha Long Bay, and board our private junk to cruise among 2,000 limestone islands and explore the grottoes and caves with a fresh seafood lunch served aboard. After a 4-hour cruise, drive back to Hanoi. Evening, farewell dinner is at Le Tonkin - a French colonial Vietnamese restaurant.
